Brad Bird is an animation genius. He went from directing THE SIMPSONS to directing THE IRON GIANT to his newest masterpiece THE INCREDIBLES.
Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson, TV’s COACH) is a top superhero, but after saving a suicidal man that didn’t want to be saved lawsuits end up forcing all superheroes into the witness protection program. Mr. Incredible, now Bob Parr, lives in the suburbs with his wife Helen (formerly Elastigirl) (Holly Hunter, THE PIANO) and his children Dash (Spencer Fox, screen debut), Violet (author Sarah Vowell, screen debut) and baby Jack Jack (Eli Fucile and Maeve Andrews, both screen debuts). Bob now works at an insurance company, which he hates. Once a week, him and his old superhero friend Lucius Best (aka Frozone) (Samuel L. Jackson, JACKIE BROWN) go out to listen to the police scanner in their car to see if they can do something secretly heroic.
Then Bob gets a secret message from Mirage (Elizabeth Pena, LONE STAR), who works for a mega-corporation that needs Mr. Incredible’s help. This mission revitalizes Bob. When his super suit gets ripped he seeks help from his old friend Edna Mode (Bird), who is a cross between Q from the Bond films and Edith Head, the famed Hollywood costume designer of many of Hitchcock’s films. However, a man from Mr. Incredible’s past comes back to haunt him calling himself Syndrome (Jason Lee, MALLRATS). This forces Helen to come out of retirement with Violet and Dash secretly sneaking along for the ride.
The film works equally as a satire of superheroes and a thrilling superhero adventure. However, the true greatness of the film is in its heart. The center of this film is very pro-family, which is great. In addition, the film advocates the encouragement of people’s God given talents. This is where the film is its most brilliant. Take special note to Dash’s comment on all people being special and Bob’s thoughts of fourth grade graduations. The character design is wonderful. The voice work fits each character’s personality perfectly. Director Bird steals every scene he is in as Edna. The pacing is perfect and the plot is exciting. Pixar has the greatest winning streak in film history. This film is one of their best as well as one of the best this year.
