You're right, subtly always gets overshadowed by flash. Oldman is exceptional, which is why he's the perfect actor to bring weight to what could be a very thankless role. Some roles call for a little flash and others don't; a great actor nows how much flash to bring and when to bring it. This is why for all the roles, Christopher Nolan's casting is just one of the amazing feats in THE DARK KNIGHT. I've seen it twice now and it holds up upon repeat viewings. It is one great film.

I think Gary Oldman deserves as much if not more acclaim for his turn as Commissioner Gordon as do Ledger and Eckhart for their roles. Oldman's understated performance is completely devoid of caricature or theatrics and I thought he was far and away the most compelling character in both of Nolan's Batmans. The Dark Knight is an excellent movie all around, but I feel like the best actor of the bunch is being overshadowed by people playing much easier roles. On paper, Gordon's a fairly boring character and I'd say making the Commissioner one of the most appealing, easy-to-relate-to figures in the story is quite a feat. Gary Oldman is one of the most incredible film actors alive today.
