The Oscar winners have been announced and now some of last night’s winners and nominees are arriving on Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow. Big name stars and amazing performances highlight this week’s new releases, as well as an overlooked doc that is a must see.
Pick of the Week
UP IN THE AIR
One of the frontrunners going into the fall, surprisingly this one was goose egged at the ceremony with no wins. This was a top ten finisher for me in 2009 and holds a poignant place as commentary on the current economic landscape of America. The film follows a downsizing expert who shies away from commitment by staying up in the air, literally. Oscar-nominated leads George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick were all outstanding. Director/writer Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner were robbed of the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for one of the best written films of 2009. Must see cinema.

CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY
Speaking of poignant commentaries on the current economic landscape of America, Michael Moore’s latest doc is a cutting look at the excesses of the U.S. capitalist system. As all his films are, they provoke no matter what side of the political field you are on. It’s hard to argue our government and economic system has gone off the rails and we need to find solutions to stop greed from bringing down the country.

PRECIOUS
As far as picking a Pick of the Week, it was a hard choice between UP IN THE AIR and PRECIOUS. Both made my top 10 for 2009. Oscar nominee Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe gives an amazing debut performance as an uneducated overweight pregnant teen who lives under the tyrannical control of her mother, played by Oscar-winner Mo’Nique. In addition, Paul Patton received an honorable mention as part of RFP’s Overlooked Awards for her role as Precious’s inspiring teacher. And don’t forget Mariah Carey who gives a surprising glam-downed performance as a caring social worker. Director Lee Daniels’ power drama is an emotional sledgehammer finding hope in the worst of conditions. Geoffrey Fletcher’s Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay was a big surprise, but not an unworthy one.

Buzzed About
PARIS
When Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche is in a new film I pay attention. She plays a single mother who moves into her brother’s apartment while he awaits a heart transplant. She has a hard time watching him, a dancer, simply watch Parisians from his window. The reviews were solid and from the trailer it seems like one of those family dramas the French do so well.

THE STONING OF SORAYA M
Based on a true story, PASSION OF THE CHRIST star Jim Caviezel plays a man who hears of a tragedy regarding an arranged marriage in Iran and is pressured to leave the spread the truth outside the country. Word is that co-star Shohreh Aghdashloo, a past Oscar-nominee for THE HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG, is amazing.
