Boxing is a metaphor in "The Fighter" as well. His career as a fighter parallels his life. He has been living his life in the shadow of other boxers, most of all his brother. His family and boxing bring him up and take him down at them same time and he can’t give up on either. He does have to make tough decisions, regarding his family, his career and his new love. The dramatic flow comes from the redemption the final fight means not only to him, who finally gets his chance that he earned, and for his brother who finally stepped out from his own spotlight to allow his brother to shine. And at least "The Fighter" has really developed female characters unlike "Raging Bull," which only has a female punching bag.

I saw this last week and sorry, but I disagree. There were some fine performances by Melissa Leo and Christian Bale (both deserve noms), but the story was pretty cliched and well worn up to the point (**SPOILER ALERT**) that the hero gets everything he wants in one fell swoop which pretty much killed any dramatic climax. Heroes have to make tough choices; that's what makes them heroic. I cannot even put this in the same category with Raging Bull except that they both have boxing in them. Boxing is a metaphor in RB. The Fighter has no metaphors.

Since you mentioned the upcoming movie Despicable Me, we've got a site for costumes for both kids and adults this Halloween. Give us a look if interested.

Which reminds me of that other film "Cypher" by Natali. stylish and a great idea but the plot was just too convoluted... i guess the simple setup of Cube worked well with him.. it also reminds of a good Sci-fi movie i saw last year .. Eden Log, a minimal setup that hooks you till the end..

Cheers

Thanks for pointing out that typo. Natali named his main character Nicoli and the inversion was too easy.

I too had high hopes for this one. THE CUBE was excellent and I really like Adrian Brody. The thing that is most disappointing about SPLICE is that it had all the right pieces but they just were not put together in the most compelling way.
